“The Pink Dream” sold for a record sum of 83 million dollars (PHOTO)
“The Pink Dream” diamond, a rock the size of a plum, was sold Wednesday in Geneva for a record $ 83 million in a Sotheby‘s auction informs Reuters.
“The diamond was bought by the famous diamond cutter Isaac Wolf who has renamed it ‘The Pink Dream’“, said Matthew Weigman, communications director of Sotheby’s.
Isaac Wolf, a diamond cutter in New York, the diamond for $83,187,381 against other three other bidders.
The 59.60-carat Diamond has now a triple world record: the highest price paid at auction for a pink diamond, the highest price paid at auction for any colored diamond and the highest price paid at auction for a gem.
At the auction held on Wednesday was also the largest jewelry sale in history, with a total of 199.5 million dollars, according to Sotheby ‘s.
The previous record was set by the “Graff Pink” pink diamond, 24.78-carats, bought in 2010 for $ 45.75 million by Laurence Graff , a London jeweler known as the “King of Diamonds”.
“Honestly, when I sold the Graff diamond three years ago, I thought it would be a record for a long time. After three years, this evenings price is great, it means the first places in the order of the highest priced are three pink diamonds”, said David Bennett, the head of the auction.
“Pink Star” diamond was cut and polished from a raw 132.5-carat rock. De Beers company extracted it somewhere in Africa in 1999 , although it is not known the exact geographical location. It was first sold in 2007, and the seller wanted to remain anonymous, according to Sotheby’s.
Jewelry designer brand made by European designers such as Cartier, Bulgari and Van Cleef & Arpels , were sold for big money at auction on Wednesday, especially pieces from the Art Deco period of the ’30s .
At Tuesday’s auction held by rival house Christie’s , a 14.82 carat orange diamond was sold for $ 35.54 million.
