Flicker user halao65 made these beautiful images on a beach in the Maldives where, every evening, the water glistens as if it had stardust.
In fact, images taken by William Ho, caught the bioluminescent phytoplankton as it is brought to shore where it illuminates the whole beach. These small bodies glisten in a way similar to that of fireflies and tend to emit light when subjected to stress, ie when the waves hit the beach or when they are agitated.
Although the phenomenon and the chemical mechanism behind it has been observed for some time, just now scientists began to understand it better.
