Terror Lake: its water turns any living thing to stone (GALLERY)
In Tanzania, there is a lake that holds a deadly secret. The water of this lake has the “power” to turn any creature to stone. This rare phenomenon is caused by the chemical mixture from the lake, and creatures that came into contact with water seem drawn from a horror story.
Photographed by Nick Brandt and published in his new book entitled “Across the ravaged Land” creatures are petrified because of the high pH water, which has values between 9 and 10.5 (very high alkalinity that makes the bodies of these animals to be preserved forever) ‘haunting’ the shores.
“I found the creatures (all kinds of birds and bats) unexpectedly on Lake Natron in northern Tanzania. Nobody knows for sure how the animals die, but it seems that the birds are fooled by the reflection pond. Like birds crashing into plate glass windows, they crash into the lake. Water has a high concentration of both soda and salt that would clear within seconds my ink in the box of Kodak film. The soda and salt causes the creatures to calcify, perfectly preserved, as they dry. We collected the creatures from the shore and then placed them in natural positions, in order to “bring them to life” as they once were”, said Brandt.
