0Who has More Memory Problems: Man or Woman?
If your husband is absent-minded, forgets your wedding anniversary or the name of your new neighbor, don’t worry. Even scientists were surprised when they discovered how oblivious men are.
“It was surprising to find that men forget more than women. This has not been documented before. Also surprising was the fact that men are as forgetful whether they are 30 or 60 years of age”, said Professor Jostein Holmen from the University of Science and Technology in Norway (NTNU).
What I did a year ago?
Holmen and his colleagues have put volunteers involved in the study nine questions about how well they think they remember things in general. Specifically, participants were asked how often they had problems remembering things, if they have trouble remembering names or dates, if they can remember what they did last year and if they had the ability to remember details of conversations that had taken place in the past. Finally, it was found that men confessed that they had problems in 8 out of 9 questions.
“We speculated than men declare related memory problems more common than women, but so far I could not find any explanation. This continues to be a mystery”, said Holmen.
Higher level of education is associated with better memory
Women have the same problems as men when it comes to remembering things, but they manifest it at a lesser extent. And women find that it is most difficult to remember names and dates.
These problems accelerates with age, but to a lesser extent than scientists believed until now. For example, women forget just as much whether they are 30 or 50 years old.
The study also showed that people who have a higher level of education forget less compared to individuals who have low levels of education. In addition, people who suffer from anxiety or depression forget faster than other people. And these observations are valid for both sexes.
