0How can music make us smarter?
New research shows cognitive benefits that we can acquire through music. Scientists have shown that individuals who play an instrument are more able to identify errors and correct errors compared to those who do not practice any kind of musical activity.
The study, led by Dr Ines Jentzsch University St . Andrews, tested the cognitive abilities of musicians and those who do not practice any kind of musical activity and concluded that mental decline associated with aging can be prevented by learning a musical instrument.
Research published in the journal Neuropsychologia , draws attention to the skills learned during musical performances. Specifically, when musicians sing they must be aware of their actions, which plays continuously monitor the auditory feedback and anticipate mistakes.
Psychological and mental benefits of learning a musical instrument has been highlighted in previous studies .
” [ The results ] suggest that a higher level of musical training might lead to better process information and confirms previous reports indicating a positive association between mental processing speed and musical abilities ,” said Dr. Jentzsch .
New research is important because, unlike previous studies focus rather on amateur and not professional musicians. This indicates that cognitive performance can be improved even ” moderate levels of musical activity .”
Also, the study pointed out that although ” the period marked by economic difficulties, funding for music education are often the first to suffer cuts “. Children should have musical activity to improve cognitive performance.
